Financials in Myanmar

In total, we spent 23 days in Myanmar. As we did with the previous countries we visited, we will share some financial information about our stay in the country.

The total amount we spent during this period of time was 1.174€ euros for both of us. The cost timeline was as follows.

Most of the times, we were below our daily budget (65,76€ for the two). The initial high expenditures are related to the flight price from Bangkok, in Thailand, to Yangon, in Myanmar, and also the visa costs. Please note that the costs of the air ballooning in Bagan, which are quite expensive, were excluded from these expenditures, since they were not supported by us (it was Sara’s birthday gift).

To have an idea of the costs presented by category, please take a look at the circular graph below.

The main costs are related to accommodation, followed by transportation and food & beverage. In general, we paid more to have access to private rooms and good facilities, reason why this category weights more in the total expenditures. Transportation is also a significant part of the costs, given that we took several night buses and VIP buses to travel between cities. Food is cheaper in Myanmar, especially in local restaurants. Breakfast was always included in the room rate, which also contributed to lower the weight of food & beverage.

Finally, we also present below an average daily cost per city.

In what concerns the daily average cost per city, one can see that the most expensive cities were Mawlamyine and Mandalay. The first one was mainly due to the private transportation we had during our day visiting the surroundings of Mawlamyine. Mandalay ended up being more expensive because of the hotel we chose, more pricey than usual, and also because of the combo tickets that give access to some attractions of the city. All the other cities were quite cheap, even the most touristic places, such as Bagan and Inle Lake.

In fact, we found Myanmar one of the cheapest countries to visit in Asia without neglecting accommodation, food and transportation quality. It was a surprising experience how easy and comfortable it is to travel across Myanmar.
